Other Protected Characteristic Harassment
Just like state and federal laws prohibit employers from allowing sexual harassment to occur at work, those laws also prohibit harassment based on other protected characteristics, like age, national origin, religion, pregnancy, race, and disability. Under Iowa law, the same is true for gender preference or sexual orientation.
Harassment itself can take many forms, such as inappropriate comments or jokes, touching, emails, images, and verbal or physical harassment. Employees have the absolute right to work in a workplace in which harassment based on a protected characteristic does not occur.
